De Vereniging werd in 1971 in het leven geroepen op initiatief van de Hollandse Consul in Southampton. Het lidmaatschap is open voor een ieder die of de Hollandse nationaliteit bezit of andere contacten heeft met het land, de taal, of inwoners. In diverse plaatsen van her VK is er een Nederlandse Consul; bij ons is de Heer Jon Bennett erelid van de organisatie en kan u terzijde staan met problemen, inlichtingen en verlengingaanvragen van uw paspoort. Dit kan natuurlijk ook gebeuren via de Ambassade in London (www.netherlands-embassy.org.uk).

Wij hebben als doel het versterken van onderlinge contacten en met diegenen die eenzelfde interesse in Nederland en de cultuur en gewoontes hebben. Velen van ons hebben in het algemeen geen moeite met het aanpassen in een nieuwe omgeving maar hebben toch behoefte aan contact met landgenoten.

Bij onze club in Southampton is er een actief programma met regelmatige bijeenkomsten, soms binnenshuis, soms buiten, waaronder een Koninginnedagviering, Sinterklaasfeest voor de kinderen, barbecue en wandelingen, video- en quiz-avonden, en soupeetjes van snert, nasi-goreng of zelfmeegebrachte lekkernijen.

Er verschijnt regelmatig een nieuwsbrief met 'Roddelblad' om u op de hoogte te houden van deze evenementen. Persoonlijke bijdragen of advertenties zijn van harte welkom. Via deze bron wordt u ook op de hoogte gehouden met evt. nieuwe ontwikkelingen en aankondigingen die van de Ambassade uitgaan.

U bent van harte welkom op een van onze bijeenkomsten. Lidmaatschap van de vereniging is per kalenderjaar en bedraagt £6 voor een enkel persoon of £10 voor een gezin (of £3/£5 voor lidmaatschap na juli).

The Association was founded in 1971 on the initiative of the Dutch Consul in Southampton at that time. (Our 25th Aniversary celebration was held in the Hall of Aviation in Southampton in November 1996). Membership is open to Dutch nationals and interested parties who have connections with the Netherlands, or the Dutch language. The Honorary Consul for the Netherlands in Southampton is still an honorary member.

The aim of the Association is to develop friendship between Dutch nationals and other interested parties residing in this area but above all to keep in touch with the Dutch language and its people for those who may wish to. To this end we organise activities on a regular basis, some outdoors, some meeting in varying venues to accommodate the event. Activities include: Pea-soup evening (combined with AGM), walks and cycle rides in the New Forest, 'Koninginnebal' or Queen's dinner (around the 30th April to celebrate the Queen's official birthday), barbecue in the summer, Bring-a-Dish and Nasi Goreng suppers, and a St Nicholas party for our youngsters. In addition, other events like video and quiz evenings, or visits/coach trips are organised from time to time.

A newsletter inviting you to these events is published regularly and also brings to your notice anything that may concern Dutch nationals, including national or European elections and communications from the Dutch Embassy in London. We exchange information and magazines at our meetings. The 'Roddelblad' produced by one of our members (and past president) John Miles, publishes news items and members are invited to send in their own items.

Honorary Consuls for the Netherlands are located in various parts of the United Kingdom, and will gladly deal with any queries or problems you may have, or attend to your passport renewals. Alternatively, this can be done at the Royal Netherlands Embassy, 38 Hyde Park Gate, London SW7 5DP (www.netherlands-embassy.org.uk). The Department for Press and Cultural Affairs also publishes a 'Dutcharts' leaflet announcing cultural events throughout the UK.
